24. A Rule-Based Incident Tracking System (ITS)
Investigator(s): Mike Moulton
ITS is an incident tracking system, an application used for the generation, tracking and reporting of problems encountered on a manufacturing line. It was developed to facilitate communications between a manufacturing plant and a design laboratory. These sites may be many hundreds of miles apart but they still have to work closely together in the introduction of any new product. The system allows incidents, i.e. production problems, to be generated online and then routed automatically to the responsible person who has to provide a resolution within a specified time period. If necessary, automatic escalation up the management chain will take place to ensure appropriate priority is placed on the problem. The logic of the system is determined by rules embedded within a series of decision tables, thus allowing quick and easy updating to reflect changing business needs.
